FACTS about Hippos

Did you know…

  • There are two species of hippo. The Nile or common hippopotamus is the largest and most well known, sometimes weighing over 7,000 lbs. The pygmy hippopotamus lives in the forests of western Africa and only weighs 500-600 lbs.
  • Although they spend the day in water, hippos don’t eat water plants.
  • They travel miles on land at night to graze on grass.
  • Hippos mark their territory by spreading dung with their paddle shaped tails.
